Gather round one and all… it’s Stephen’s story time!
Today’s video focuses on the lessons I’ve learned over the years on how to use effects on virtual instruments.
Not only that, but it goes into detail on where exactly I picked up these ideas, the pro mixers that use them and how you can develop them as part of your own mixing style.
Now like I said, today’s video has a bit of a story to it, so you can watch it to find out more.
Check it out!
Now, I’d love to know…
Do you notice a difference when you use dedicated plugins rather than the effects built into your VSTs?

professional sounding mix every time...

Hi Stephen! Good stuff here in this video.
Untill few days ago, I`d say that stock plugins and / or samples that come with any DAW these days would be more than enough to get the desired results. But after receiving the final result / evaluation of the song I decided to put to HOFA`s international production contest, I`m not so sure…
This phrase in particular caught me by surprise: “Some of the used drum sounds have a very cheap and unpleasant character. Snare and hihat in particular should be replaced with more suitable and less harsh samples. The piano sound doesn’t really fit the musical context and therefore seems very alien.”
Should I feel depressed? Of course not. It`s just an oppinion (even thought they are supposed to be professionals) and I don`t really agree with everything they`ve said about the song (the piano seems very alien?… C`mon!).
Nevertheless, it might be true that (FOR SOMEONE ELSE`S EARS) better plugins and / or samples can do the trick! So, yes Stephen, what you`ve shown in his video is true.
Final note: what HOFA`S Jury didn`t know was that all the sounds I´ve used were chosen acordingly whit what I wanted the song to sound like, so the “harsh” and “unpleasant” sounds were in fact intentional! 😀 (did they ever read the lyrics??)
Stay well!
