This is a fun one! There are various types of reverb and a multitude of reverb plugins. That can often lead to us overthinking which type of reverb or which plugin to use in what application… it can get overwhelming!
Fear not, it’s not as complicated as you might think.
The reason why this video came about in the first place is because Soundtoys gave away their new reverb, ‘Little Plate’ for a brief period of time. I got my hands on it because I really love using plate reverb in mixes and I’m going to explain exactly why, as well as giving you a plugin review!
In this video, you’ll learn:
- A brief summary of what reverb is
- Why you should add reverb to your mixes
- What plate reverb is
- How hardware plate reverbs work
- How reverb interacts with various types of delay
- All about SoundToys Little Plate plugin
…and much more!
Now, if you’re feeling extra generous today, let me know…
What’s your favourite type of reverb and what do you use it on?

I have always been a big fan of Waves TrueVerb, A Room setting. It is just enough to add some space but not so much that it overwhelms.
Stephen says
Thanks Rick! I have TrueVerb in my collection but have never really used it that much. Got it as part of a bundle a few years ago. I’ll definitely try it out on my next mix.

I use the little plate on snares, vocals and keys…I love the little plate, it’s awesome!! I also use a standard reverb for guitars mostly…
Stephen says
Yes, I agree Thomas. It’s awesome! I haven’t tried it on keys but I will next time. Thanks for your feedback and tip!

I use reverbs on guitars, vocals, snare and pianos to create the space along with using delays as much or more than the reverbs. I have quite a number of reverbs that I use. One of my favorites is The OldSkool reverb but Voxengo which is free. Next is the Waves Renanissance and Waves Trueverb. Then for alot of my mixing the Abbey Roads Plates and Kramer Master tape finish off. If the need arises I can always go to one of the others that are in reserve which is rare. The Soundtoys Little Plate works well on the few mixes I have tried it on..

Thanks for the detailed reply Phil. You’re the second person who’s mentioned TrueVerb – so I’ll have to give it a go! I like the way you describe some of your plugins as “in reserve”. You know what you like and have your system. Great job!
