Now, without further ado, here’s the breakdown of Stephen’s Selects #3: October 14th – 20th…
- A Winged Victory For The Sullen – ‘Atomos X’
Trippy synths instantly pull you in with very creative use of the stereo field. They’re then joined by beautiful strings that enter on the left side of the mix and leave you wanting more. You’re then given more as the rest of the string section fills out the mix. The sound design used on the voices is a particular treat and I hope you enjoy this track as much as I do. - Mayer Hawthorne – ‘Where Does This Door Go’
Lots of producers look for a classic sound with a modern day vibe. If that’s you, then this track will definitely help you achieve that. Use it as a reference or just enjoy the music. This song is also produced by Greg Wells, so that’s always a plus! - Post Malone ft. Ozzy Osbourne & Travis Scott – ‘Take What You Want’
Ozzy Osbourne is 70 years old and still creating new music. It’s nice to hear this collaboration with Post Malone; who is a lot more versatile than one might think. This is another pristine Manny Marroquin mix and I especially love how the bass has been handled by the legendary mixing engineer. - Muse – ‘Supermassive Black Hole’
This is a nod to something that popped up in my own life over this past week but it’s also a great song! The blend of guitars and bass is done beautifully. If you want to know how to get wide, balanced mixes, then this track is a very good reference. - Daft Punk – ‘Around The World/Harder Better Faster Stronger’
This is a live version of a number of Daft Punk tracks all in one. They performed this at ‘Alive 2007’ and it’s an incredible example of live production/mixing. The blending, transitions, mixing and vibe in such a huge live setting is just amazing. These guys are geniuses. - J Dilla – ‘City of Boom – Instrumental’
Speaking of genius… have some J Dilla. If you want a reference for the best of the best in beats, then it’s Dilla. Nothing else needs to be said. - Miraa May – ‘Make Room’
On to another strong beat. The vocals and drums in this track are prominent and upfront which makes the synths sound distant and creates a very nice sense of space in the mix. - David Bowie – ‘Lazarus’
I was watching an episode of ‘Peaky Blinders’ last week that features this song. It reminded me of the brilliance of ‘Blackstar’ and how incredible David Bowie was an artist. His music will live on forever and ‘Lazarus’ is a perfect example of why that is the case. If you ever mix or produce brass instruments, then this is for you. - Burial – ‘Homeless’
I was sent some Burial tracks as reference material for an album I’m about to master. I’ve been a huge fan for a long time now and if you’re not yet switched on to his work, now is the time! Pay particular attention to his use of incredibly interesting samples. - Being As An Ocean – ‘Intro (The Envoy)’
The vinyl static theme continues with this track. Even though it says “intro”, it’s the outro to my playlist this week. If you create library music or music for film, then this track is for you. Plus, who can’t resist a nice drop?!Click here to listen to the full playlist on Spotify!
(Please note that the link will send you to the playlist of the current week and might not feature the tracks listed above!)
