If synths or keys are part of any of your productions, then this is something that will really help you.
Whether they’re analog, digital, or virtual/soft synths, the techniques I go through in this video will get you thinking about how you can get your mixes sounding wider, deeper and much more balanced.
In this video, you’ll learn… A LOT about:
- How to use EQ on synth tracks
- How and why we compress synths
- How saturation affects synths
- What reverb to use on synth tracks
- How to balance tracks with the use of effects sends
…and much more!
Not only that, but I’m going to show you how these concepts and techniques can be used on any instrument in your mix…
Now, I’d love to know…
What do you do to get wider, balanced synth sounds in your mix?

Ok. Have to leave a comment on this… When I´m working with a midi controller, sometimes I have to modify the sounds that I choose (and I´ll have this video`s content in mind). But, most of the time, I use my analog synths and simply pick the sounds that better fit on the track`s context, level the volume (only) and move on! This means that my workflow is faster by listening / choosing different programs and recording them directly into the tracks than trying to make ajustments afterwards (and, trust me, I use lots of sinths). More than that (people ain`t gonna like me saying this), when I put any one of my synths on a track, I wish him to stay pure as a virgen (no EQs, please!!! – I`m serious) so I can always reconise “my sound” – just like any famous guitarrist that want`s his/her guitar to be “that unique world-wide sound” 😀
So, simply put: if the synth isn`t adding anything to the track (meaning that isn`t loud enough or in the wrong frequency range), what can we do? Use another program! That`s so simple…
And Stephen, thank you so much by replying my last contact; means You`re really someome special… On To The Next Year!!!

Great comment Paulo. What you’re really talking about here is your production serving the song – which is something I completely agree with. If I’m mixing and I haven’t written or produced the track, I have very little selection over the synth tracks like you do. So, sometimes they need some treatment to fit in the mix better.
Love your approach!
