I’m Stephen and I created Understanding Audio for you.
When you watch most audio tutorial videos online, you’ll be shown how to use a few tricks. When you apply what I teach, you’ll know how to use the techniques I show you but you’ll also deeply understand why you’re using them.
Why is always more important than how.
By understanding the why, you get the fundamentals right every time so that they’re embedded in your brain. By having those fundamentals right, you can take giant leaps forward on your audio journey and bypass years of frustration.
You see, I want you to have that deep understanding of what you’re doing so that you can easily apply it to any production, no matter what the genre.
Now, I’d like you to answer these questions for yourself:

I created Understanding Audio for you. But here’s a little bit about me…
I’m Stephen – a lifelong musician and lover of all things audio.
From concert bands in Dublin, to teenage guitarist, university graduate (BA in Music Technology and a MA in Computer Music) and then studio intern (yay free work!) to salaried engineer and freelancer in London… I’ve had the privilege of being involved in a lot of great projects and working with some amazing people. My experience ranges from working in some of Europe’s top post-production studios; taking creative lead on sound design for numerous award-winning animation series, to working as a consultant for Fortune 500 companies and then to the very top of the games industry.
In 2017, I was nominated for Best Sound Design & Music at the Irish Animation Awards for working on a project I love with the most unbelievably talented people. Not a single day of the project felt like work and it’s my proudest achievement to date.
These days, you can find me working as an audio producer with some of the world’s top AAA games companies, helping them craft their vision and tell their stories.
Throughout all of those experiences, I have never stopped working with artists and bands in the music industry from across the globe. I count myself lucky to be able to produce music with incredible people and do what I love every day.
